IoT Innovator Aids Maternal Care with AI-Powered Solutions
Modernizing maternal care and bridging the healthcare gap in rural regions, Senthil Kumar Murugesan, an engineer by profession, founded JioVio Healthcare in 2019.
This IoT-based startup focuses on revolutionizing antenatal care for pregnant women by providing early risk monitoring services at home.
In India, pregnant women are advised to attend a minimum of four antenatal care visits to safeguard both their well-being and that of their fetus.
However, statistics reveal a concerning discrepancy: 54 percent of mothers in rural areas attend these recommended visits, compared to 68.1 percent in urban zones.
This gap in care can lead to complications, with 97 maternal deaths reported per 1,00,000 live births between 2018 and 2020.
Identifying this urgent need, Senthil Kumar initiated JioVio Healthcare. His aim is to address the challenges faced by pregnant women, especially those in remote regions.
His startup developed an innovative AI tool capable of predicting high-risk pregnancies during the second trimester.
This predictive technology offers early doctor’s recommendations for necessary adjustments in nutrition, sleep patterns, and more.
Senthil’s ultimate goal is to transform high-risk pregnancies into low-risk ones, ensuring timely medical interventions and proper nourishment.
Since its inception, JioVio Healthcare has impacted over 30 lakh mothers across 14,328 villages in many states.
Through their 1,000-day care program, Senthil’s team has assisted 7,320 high-risk pregnant women, delivering essential monitoring services.
Central to their approach is the creation of a smart wearable device known as Allowear, tailored for continuous monitoring of high-risk pregnant women.
This battery-operated device tracks vital parameters. These include sleep patterns, calories burned, pulse rate etc. It also serves as a medication reminder, enhancing adherence.
Accredited Social Health Activist workers can collect health data through Bluetooth and upload it to the cloud for doctor review. Thus the device facilitates remote medical oversight.
This device proves invaluable in considering the broader context of a patient’s health.
For instance, if a high-risk mother exhibits elevated blood pressure, her sleep patterns are factored in.
Insufficient sleep can exacerbate blood pressure issues, prompting doctors to prescribe tailored treatments.
The Allowear is recommended for use throughout the 1,000 days, spanning from the fourth week of pregnancy to the baby’s second birthday.
Remarkably, this critical service comes at a nominal cost of ₹1 per day, funded by the government. JioVio Healthcare’s annual revenue stands at approximately ₹1.5 crore.
Through Senthil Kumar’s visionary approach, JioVio Healthcare demonstrates the power of technology-driven solutions in transforming maternal care.
Besides, the company ensures healthier pregnancies and mitigates risks for women across diverse landscapes.
