BoreCharger: A game-changing innovation for reviving dry borewells

Water scarcity has become one of the biggest challenges facing Indian agriculture.

Across states such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra, falling groundwater levels, erratic rainfall, and climate change have left many farmers struggling to secure water for irrigation and household needs.

In response, an innovative technology called BoreCharger is offering a practical and sustainable solution.

Developed by Urdhvam Environmental Technologies and supported by WHEELS Global Foundation,

BoreCharger is a patented borewell recharge system designed to rejuvenate existing borewells.

Unlike conventional pond-based recharge methods, the technology can restore groundwater at nearly one-third of the cost and in significantly less time.

The innovation works by capturing rainwater at the surface and directing it into deeper underground aquifers.

This artificial recharge process helps increase groundwater storage and improves the performance of borewells. As a result, farmers experience higher water yield, better water quality, and a longer duration of water availability.

What makes BoreCharger unique is its use of advanced technologies. The system combines satellite-based terrain mapping, borewell angiography using underwater digital cameras, specialised decision-support software, and robotic tools that create precise perforations in borewell casing pipes.

These technologies help identify the most suitable recharge points and maximise groundwater replenishment.

To test its effectiveness, WHEELS partnered with Urdhvam, Grameen Vikas Kendram, and Rural Studies and Development Society to deploy 25 BoreCharger units in villages across Kurnool district and the Bethamcherla and Dhone regions of Andhra Pradesh in 2023.

The pilot project delivered remarkable results, with groundwater levels increasing between 30% and 400% in several locations.

Beyond improving water availability, the innovation has broader social and economic benefits.

Reliable irrigation supports higher crop production, boosts farm incomes, and strengthens rural livelihoods. It also enhances food security and improves the quality of life for farming families.

As BoreCharger adoption expands, it has the potential to benefit millions of farmers across India.

By restoring groundwater resources sustainably, the technology offers a promising pathway to climate resilience, agricultural prosperity, and reduced rural distress.
