Sacred glimpse of the eternal: Chandanotsavam at Simhachalam
Faith shines brightest in rare sacred moments, and Chandanotsavam at Simhachalam Temple offers one such occasion, where devotees witness the divine in its true, unadorned form with deep reverence.
This annual festival, held on Akshaya Tritiya, draws thousands seeking a glimpse of the divine in its true form.
Unlike other days, the deity Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy appears without the sandalwood covering. Throughout the year, the idol remains coated in sandal paste.
However, on this single day, priests ceremonially remove the layers. As a result, devotees witness the original form, making the occasion deeply significant.
Preparations begin well in advance. This year, authorities expect nearly two lakh devotees.
Meanwhile, about 50,000 people have already secured tickets priced at ₹300, ₹1,000, and ₹1,500. Consequently, officials arranged free darshan for the remaining devotees. They also introduced measures to ensure smooth movement and safety.
Additionally, around 100 special buses transport pilgrims to the hilltop. Due to rising temperatures, shaded shelters line the queue paths.
Experienced teams from Tirumala and Vijayawada manage crowd flow efficiently. Early in the morning, limited devotees enter the sanctum before 5 a.m. Afterward, general darshan opens to all.
Rituals on this day carry profound spiritual meaning. Priests perform Suprabhata Seva before removing the sandal paste.
Then follows the sacred Sahasra Ghata Abhishekam using water from Gangadhara. Soon after, they conduct Panchamruta Abhishekam with 108 silver vessels.
Interestingly, about 120 kg of sandalwood is applied in cycles across the year. These applications occur on key full moon days and festivals.
Devotees believe the cooling sandal paste symbolises universal harmony. If the Lord remains calm, they feel the world stays balanced.
Chandanotsavam goes beyond ritual, embodying devotion, patience, and faith.
For countless devotees, witnessing this rare transformation deepens spiritual connection, inspires reflection, and brings a profound sense of inner peace and fulfilment.
