Rue de Fontainhas – visiting the bylanes of Goa

Amidst the glistening beaches, the scorching sun, the exotic food to cheap daaru, their lies a Goa quietly tucked away in the picturesque lanes (‘rue’) of Fontainhas that belies all the history written about its sun & sand retreats. Nothing celebrates the magic of the lovely Portuguese architecture and culture than Fountainhas located in the old quatier of Panjim beside the Ourem creek. It is a small cluster of beautiful whitewashed facades with edges carefully painted in brilliant hues of yellow & blue. Cemented alley ways lead you from one dainty home to another, those that now boast of art galleries, inns, lit up restaurants and shops that sell Portuguese style goan souvenirs. A small stop at the dimly lit ‘Linda’s Viva Panjim’ is a good idea to spend the evening enjoying traditional fish curry and some light music Author: Rohini C
