Interesting facts about Kashi Mahakal Express

Kashi Mahakal Express was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.

It is the third corporate passenger train by Indian Railways and the latest fully air-conditioned passenger train that connects three Jyotirlingas in two states – Omkareshwar, Mahakaleshwar and Kashi Vishwanath.

The train starts its services from today.

Here are some interesting facts about Kashi Mahakal Express:


  • Kashi Mahakal Express is from Varanasi to Indore.
  • It operates thrice in a week between Varanasi and Indore, once via Prayagraj (Allahabad) and twice via Lucknow.
  • It covers a total distance of 1131 km between Varanasi and Indore via Lucknow and a distance of 1102 km between Varanasi and Indore via Prayagraj.
  • The train has a reserved seat for the deity. Seat number 64 in coach B5 is reserved for Lord Mahakal permanently and it would be left vacant.
  • It is the first time that a seat in the Railways has been reserved completely for the deity and left vacant.
  • The seat has the drawings of the temple to make people aware that the seat has been reserved for Lord Shiva.
  • The train will have light devotional music. It also has two completely dedicated private security guards in each coach. It will serve only the vegetarian meal.
  • The coaches of the train will have LED lights. Complimentary travel insurance is provided worth ₹10 lakhs for the trip to the passengers.
  • Train fare is dynamic. There will be no concession in the fare for this train. Only children below 5 years of age have been exempted from the fare.
  • The train will depart from Varanasi at 2:45 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday and reach Indore at 9:40 a.m. the following day.
  • For the return trip, the train will depart from Indore at 10:55 a.m. every Wednesday and Friday and reach Varanasi at 6:00 a.m. the next day from February 21. This is a Bi-weekly trip.
  • For the return trip of another weekly service, the train will leave Indore at 10:55 a.m. every Monday and arrive at Varanasi at 5:00 a.m. the next day from February 24.
