A lamp that time could not extinguish
Faith often finds its strongest voice in traditions that quietly endure across centuries. In Telangana’s Karimnagar district, one such tradition continues to inspire devotion and wonder.
At the Sri Seetha Rama Swami Temple in Gambhiraopeta, a sacred oil lamp has burned without interruption for nearly 700 years.
Known as the Akhand Jyothi or Nanda Deepam, it stands as a symbol of unwavering belief. Devotees visit the temple not only for prayers but also to witness this remarkable flame.
Historical inscriptions on a temple bell trace its origins to 1314. The temple was built during the reign of Pratapa Rudrudu, the last ruler of the Kakatiya dynasty. At that time, rulers ensured the lamp never went out.
They allocated resources carefully and even used tax collections to purchase oil for the flame. Thus, governance and devotion worked hand in hand.
However, as kingdoms faded, the responsibility shifted to the people. Today, local donors sustain the tradition with dedication.
Among them, a couple named Ramulu and Pramila have taken a lifelong pledge. They continue to supply oil, often spending from their own savings, sometimes amounting to several thousand rupees annually. Their commitment reflects the spirit of community-led preservation.
Moreover, the temple becomes especially vibrant during the annual Sri Rama Navami celebrations. A grand ceremony marks the celestial wedding of Lord Rama and Goddess Seetha.
This ritual takes place in a beautifully crafted 16-pillared Kalyan Mantap facing the temple. As a result, the event draws thousands of devotees from nearby towns and villages.
During this festival, the Nanda Deepam becomes a focal point of reverence. Visitors patiently wait for a glimpse, believing the eternal flame carries divine blessings. The atmosphere fills with devotion, music, and tradition.
The uninterrupted lamp is more than a ritual. It represents continuity, shared responsibility, and enduring faith.
Even as times change, the flame continues to burn, quietly reminding generations of their cultural roots.
