Women’s Day celebrations in India

Today the world is celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) to mark the achievements of women in various fields including social, political and economical.

International Women’s Day color is Pantone’s Ultra Violet which indicates gender equality.

India is also celebrating IWD. In this regard, several programmes are being held by different state governments.

The Maharashtra government is going to roll out ‘Asmita Yojana’ under which school girls will get a sanitary napkin packet at ₹5 and rural women can avail them ₹24 and ₹29

The Telangana government announced awards to famous women personalities from different fields like education, literature, sports, medical, music, dance etc. on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The awardees will be given a cash prize of ₹1 lakh.

Several awareness campaigns are being conducted on the impacts of imbalance in sex ratio in Gujarat. The Gujarat government will be giving flowers and sweets in addition to silver coins to girl children born on this day.

Indian Railways is installing sanitary napkin dispensers at about 200 major railway stations throughout the country.

The Uttara Pradesh government is honoring sanitation workers and women village heads on this day in Lucknow.

The Karnataka government aims to go open defecation free by achieving complete sanitary coverage.

In Andhra Pradesh, Chandragiri, a little known station is announced as the all women-railway station in the south central railway zone.

The Kerala government is organizing several programmes for a week starting from today. 11 women will be honored with Vanitha Ratnam awards which carry a cash prize of ₹3 lakh and a citation.

The Odisha government is also launching a free sanitary napkin scheme to school girls. The scheme ‘Khushi’ benefits 17 lakh girls. They will receive sanitary napkins for free by the government.
