UP government to distribute free smartphones to students

Ahead of the Assembly elections, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to distribute smartphones and tablets to students. The Yogi Adityanath government announced the distribution of tablets and mobile phones to students of final year graduation and above.

The free distribution process will start from December 25, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The initiative will benefit around one crore students. Initially, one lakh pieces including both tablets and smartphones will be distributed to students.

All final year of students of B.A., B.Tech, B.Sc, MA., M.Tech, ITI, MBBS, MD, PhD, and many more are eligible to get free tablets and smartphones announced by the state government under the scheme. In the first phase, 60,000 smartphones and 40,000 tablets will be distributed to students.

Earlier also, the UP government announced free distribution of laptops to students. The scheme, Free Laptop Yojana, intends to benefit more than 25 lakhs students. The government rolled out the scheme, Free Laptop Yojana, to all brilliant students studying Class 10 and 12. It allocated a budget of ₹1,800 for this scheme. The government says that providing free laptops to these students help improve their marks further.


Now, the UP state government decided to distribute tablets and mobile phones to students who are pursuing their final year of graduation and above. Aiming to attract more youth for the upcoming Assembly elections, the government rolled out these free distribution schemes.

The DigiShakti portal of the government is open for registrations of the scheme. So far, over 38 lakh students have registered on the portal. The portal is still open for registrations of the eligible beneficiaries.

The government placed an order for smartphones and tablets to distribute in the first phase. It spent ₹2,035 crores to buy these pieces from different companies like Samsung, Acer, and Lava.
