Reliance launches country’s first rooftop drive-in theatre

Reliance Retail announced the launch of the country’s first open-air roof-top theatre at Jio World Drive in Mumbai from today.

This drive-in theatre can accommodate 290 cars. The theatre, Jio Drive-In, is one of the biggest theatres in Mumbai with 24m x 10m dimensions. PVR Ltd. will operate it.

The theatre will show the film Sooryavanshi. Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, and Katrina Kaif played lead roles in the movie.

Here are some key points about Jio Drive-In theatre:

  • Jio Drive-In theatre spreads in 17.5 acres in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.
  • Tickets for movies can be booked on BookMyShow or via the PVR app.
  • The price of the ticket for each car is around ₹1,200. Four people are allowed per vehicle.
  • The theatre is powered by Christie RGB Laser Projection.
  • Only fully vaccinated people will be allowed to enter the mall complex.
  • Reliance also plans to launch a multi-cuisine restaurant, Nine Dine, at Jio World Drive soon. Also, an Italian restaurant will be launched to provide nutritious Italian flavours to customers.

Due to COVID-19, many people are not interested in going to cinema theatres. They prefer open spaces. Since it is an open-air theatre, the company expects the visit of more people.

Jio World Drive CEO Darshan Mehta said that the theatre has nice weather and good food. Besides, it is safer than normal shopping complexes and theatres due to its open space. So, it is an ideal place for people to visit.

Though Drive-in theatre is a popular concept in many foreign countries like the US, it is gaining popularity only in recent years in the country.

There are few drive-in theatres in India. These include Sunset Drive-in-Cinema in Ahmedabad, Under the Stars in Bengaluru, Prarthana Beach Drive-in-Theatre in Chennai, and Gurgaon Talkies in the NCR region. Now, the Jio Drive-In theatre has also been added to the list. Though the other drive-in theatres are not popular due to their geographical and weather conditions, Reliance hopes for the best. The company says that its drive-in theatre has favourable geographical and weather conditions.
