Mumbai Rains: Main Runway closes in Mumbai Airport

The continuous rains in Mumbai are disrupting the lives of common people. Several local trains and flights have been cancelled due to the heavy rainfall.

Sources state this is the heaviest rainfall in a decade. More than 81 domestic flights have been cancelled and over 70 flight services have been diverted.

A large crowd of passengers was waiting on Tuesday at the airport for information on flights and boarding.

This is due to the closure of the main runway which can handle 48 airplane movements every hour.

The airport authorities stated the SpiceJet plane was stuck partially on the runway on Monday due to overshoot and it would take time to remove it, hence the main runway would be closed until Thursday.

However, the second runway which can handle 35 aircraft movements per hour is being used for flight operations.

On Monday, a SpiceJet flight that carries 167 passengers and crew was stuck partially on the runway and the nearby grass area after landing.

A team of technicians and engineers started working on removing the stuck plan with the kit which is only available with Air India.

This incident was the second in one week of time that a SpiceJet aircraft overshot the runway.

On June 30, a SpiceJet plane veered off the runway at Surat airport due to heavy rainfall and wind.

Mumbai airport is the second business in the country with nearly 1,000 plane movements per day including arrivals and departures.

Delhi airport is the busiest by handling nearly 1,300 movements per day.

At least 19 people were dead due to heavy rains in different incidents in Mumbai. More than a dozen people were killed in a wall crash in Malad.

The rainfall of 200 mm or more per day is hampering the normal life of people. The cancellation of local trains created a chaotic condition to thousands of passengers who use them regularly.
