Delhi government fined for failing to curb pollution

As Delhi is witnessing high pollution levels, the Delhi government was slapped by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) with a fine of ₹25 crore.

Since the Delhi government had failed in curbing pollution, it was slapped with a hefty fine.

The bench said that the fine should be deducted from the salary of Delhi government officials as well as people who are polluting the environment in Delhi.

If the government failed to deposit the specified fine, then it must have to pay a fine of ₹10 crore per month.

The NGT observed that the Delhi government failed to follow the previous orders.

The air quality in Delhi NCR region has been whirling under the ‘very poor’ category since October 24.

The Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority had advised government to ban all private vehicles that run without CNG in Delhi.

Earlier, in the month of October, the NGT imposed a fine of ₹50 crore on the Delhi government as it had failed to stop steel pickling industries from functioning in the residential areas.

The Delhi Master Plan, 2021 provided the list of prohibited industrial activity and these industries fall under the list.

The NGT asked the government to shut down the industries in 2016. Despite the orders, the government did not close down the industries.

An NGO had approached the NGT seeking execution of its order. In this context, the NGT is questioning the government for not implementing its orders.

The NGT ordered the government to establish a committee with three members for identifying the responsible persons for granting the license to these industries. And the committee can also take action against them.

The Delhi High Court also directed the government to frame guidelines on bursting firecrackers and burning Ravana’s effigies during Dusshera to be implemented from next year.
