TRACES 2.0: A smarter, simpler tax experience

India’s tax system is moving toward a more digital and user-friendly future.

The revamped TRACES portal marks a significant step in that direction, aligning with the newly enforced Income-Tax Act 2025 from April 1, 2026.

The upgraded platform brings a unified space for all TDS and TCS services. Users now experience a cleaner interface with smoother navigation.

Moreover, the structured layout helps taxpayers locate services quickly. Even if someone accesses the older portal link, automatic redirection ensures a seamless transition.

At the core of this upgrade is a centralised dashboard. It allows users to download TDS certificates, track credits, and request corrections easily.

In addition, a dedicated compliance section simplifies access to filings for FY26 and earlier years. As a result, manual effort reduces while accuracy improves.

Significant changes also appear in TDS filing forms. The government has replaced Forms 24Q and 26Q with Forms 138 and 140.

Form 138 is designed for salary-related deductions, including pensions and specified senior citizen cases.

Meanwhile, Form 140 covers non-salary payments such as rent, commission, and professional fees. Both forms follow a quarterly structure, yet they aim to minimise mismatches and speed up processing.

For property buyers, the process remains largely unchanged. TDS payments must still be completed using Form 26QB on the e-filing portal.

However, the TRACES portal becomes essential afterwards. Users can download Form 16B, verify details, and make corrections when needed. Therefore, post-payment tasks are now more streamlined.

On the other hand, TCS rules have become less burdensome. Foreign travel packages now attract a flat 2% TCS instead of higher slab rates.

Similarly, overseas remittances for education and medical needs are taxed at just 2%, reduced from 5%. This change lowers upfront costs for taxpayers.

The transformation reflects a clear push toward efficiency and transparency. With improved tools and reduced complexities, managing taxes is becoming faster and more intuitive for everyone.
