More than 10% of rural population never went to school

According to the survey of NSSO that was conducted between January and July 2014, nearly 11% of rural and 6% of urban in the age group of 5 to 29 years never went to school or educational institution.

Shockingly, the dropouts are more in urban areas than in rural regions. It is 38% in urban regions and 33% in rural areas. Majority of dropouts are in the age group of 5 to 15 in rural areas whereas it is 16-24 age group in the urban regions. The female dropouts are more in the age group of 5-15 and 25-29 in the rural areas whereas their number is more in the age group of 16-24 in the urban regions.

The survey discovered that the ratio of ‘never enrolled’ people was reduced by 30% when compared to 2007-08. The reasons for non-enrolment vary and are not the same in both the rural and urban areas. 33% of males and 27% of females in rural areas are not interested in education, hence they are not enrolled with any educational institution. Whereas the reason for the non-enrollment in urban areas for 33% males and 30% females is financial limitations. Engaging in economic activities is the most common reason for males to drop out of education, engaging in domestic activities and marriage are the reasons for females to drop out.
