Government launches national helpline against atrocities
To prevent atrocities on Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), the central government launched a National Helpline Against Atrocities (NHAA).
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment today released a statement. In it, the ministry said that the helpline would ensure proper implementation of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
There are certain provisions in this law. They are aimed to end discrimination against SCs and STs and offer protection to them. Still, the majority of people do not know them. The helpline aimed to create awareness about these provisions among people.
The National Helpline against atrocities on SCs and STs is a toll-free number – 14566 across the country. This number will be available round the clock. Its mobile application will also be available.
Victims, complainants or NGOs can complain using this helpline number. Anyone who wants to access it can make a voice call from their mobile phones or landline numbers. The helpline can also be accessed by VOIP.
The service will be available in English, Hindi and the regional language of the states and union territories so that users can choose their convenient language and follow the steps to lodge their complaints.
Any complaint filed under the system is registered as an FIR, and the helpline assures it. Besides, all registered complaints will be investigated. Charge sheets will be filed for complaints. They will be prosecuted in the courts if needed. Also, the helpline system ensures relief to the victims.
The system will implement the concept of a single point of contact to ease the process. It also has a feedback system.
The helpline service is also available as a web-based self-service portal. A docket number will be given for every complaint. Using this number, victims or complainants can track the status of their grievances online.
