River Ganga crosses extreme danger level
The river Ganga’s water level has been rising constantly. Now it has crossed the extreme danger level in Malda district of West Bengal. It left a devastating effect submerging many areas in several villages. It has been estimated that a population of approximately 20,000 has been affected the flood says a district official.
Kanchan Chowdhury, the Additional District Magistrate talked about this situation in an official statement. He said that the rise of water level in river Ganga has been increasing consistently. He said that the reason for this increase in the water level was due to the release of 10 lakh cusecs of water from the Sone dam in Uttar Pradesh.
The Additional District Magistrate talked about which areas were affected badly due to this flood. He said that the areas that suffered the worst of it are Kalichak Block number 3, Pardewanapur-Shobhapur gram panchayat and Birnagar gram panchayat.
Furthermore, those two panchayats have already suffered due to other reasons. Due to the land erosion that occurred in those areas, the residents are already having a hard. Now this flood also hit them hard says Chowdhury. The flooding also severely affected the roads of many areas nearby.
Talking about the Manikchak block, the Additional District Magistrate said that there are 10 villages which were affected by the flood.
In order to provide fast help to victims or for emergencies, control rooms have been opened at the gram panchayat, block and district levels. They also alerted the villagers last night. Furthermore, in order to control the situation, the district administration kept constant watch and made arrangements to quickly distribute tarpaulin and provide dry food for the flood affected victims. According to Chowdhury, flood centres will also be opened.
The state Irrigation department gave notification to the district administration to take all necessary steps and face any upcoming and present situation.
