Weaver Services bridging India’s affordable housing gap
Founded less than two years ago, Weaver Services has quickly become a key player in India’s affordable housing finance sector.
Led by Satrajit Bhattacharya, a veteran with decades of experience in billion-dollar M&A deals and business building at HDFC, Weaver aims to make homeownership accessible to underserved individuals and families, particularly women and self-employed households.
The startup’s core mission is to provide tailored housing finance solutions for those often overlooked by traditional lenders.
Many working in the informal sector or earning modest incomes struggle to access housing loans.
Weaver addresses this by combining financial access with guidance and support, helping borrowers achieve the security and dignity of owning a home.
Bhattacharya’s personal experiences, seeing families share small spaces and struggling to secure housing, have shaped the startup’s human-centred approach.
In just 16 months, Weaver has acquired two housing finance companies, CIHL and Centrum, raising $170 million from marquee investors.
These acquisitions allowed the startup to scale rapidly, leveraging existing teams, platforms, and local networks instead of building everything from scratch.
This strategy has accelerated market entry and improved operational efficiency while staying aligned with Weaver’s mission.
Despite its early success, Weaver faces challenges inherent to India’s housing finance market.
The affordable housing shortage is enormous, nearly 100 million units, and mortgage penetration is only around 13 per cent of GDP.
Access to loans drops sharply outside major cities, leaving millions of potential homeowners underserved.
Bridging this gap requires not only capital but also innovative solutions tailored to borrowers’ unique circumstances.
Looking ahead, Weaver plans to expand its reach and impact by designing products specifically for women and self-employed families, offering financial literacy, flexible repayment options, and localised support.
By combining technology with human guidance, the startup aims to make affordable housing finance more inclusive and effective.
Weaver Services represents a bold effort to transform India’s housing landscape, proving that strategic acquisitions, customer-focused solutions, and deep social understanding can create meaningful change in the lives of millions.
