EPFO launches Passbook Lite and eases PF transfers

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced key digital reforms under its EPFO 3.0 initiative, aimed at making provident fund (PF) services more transparent, efficient, and member-friendly.

One of the major updates is ‘Passbook Lite’, a simplified tool that allows members to quickly view a summary of their PF contributions, withdrawals, and current balance.

This can be accessed without logging into the full passbook portal, making it faster and easier to use.

According to Labour & Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, this reform integrates APIs and reduces load on the standalone portal.

For a detailed view and graphical insights, members can still access the existing portal.

This move will streamline member services through a single login, reduce password-related issues, and improve user experience.

Another key reform is the online access to Annexure K, the PF transfer certificate previously available only between PF offices.

Now, when an employee switches jobs and initiates a PF transfer via Form 13, they can:

  • Download Annexure K directly in PDF format
  • Track transfer status online
  • Ensure the correct update of the balance and service period in the new account

This eliminates delays, provides transparency, and creates a permanent digital record, helpful for EPS (Employees’ Pension Scheme) calculations.

EPFO has also simplified claim settlements by delegating approval powers from Officer-in-Charge to Assistant PF Commissioners and lower ranks.

This includes:

  • PF transfers and final settlements
  • Advances and refunds
  • Interest adjustments or payment issues

Previously, multiple approval layers caused delays. The new structure speeds up claim approvals, improves accountability, and enhances service quality at field offices, ensuring quicker and more efficient processing for beneficiaries.

Experts say these changes show EPFO’s strong commitment to digital transformation and member convenience.

By leveraging technology and decentralising decision-making, EPFO aims to build trust, reduce grievances, and offer a seamless experience to its over 27 crore members.
