India’s hypersonic missile to outpace BrahMos
India is gearing up for a major leap in defence technology with the development of a powerful hypersonic missile.
After the global attention garnered during Operation Sindoor, where the BrahMos missile was used to strike terrorist bases in Pakistan, India is now preparing to unveil an even faster and more lethal weapon.
The hypersonic missile, currently under development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will surpass the BrahMos in both speed and destructive capability.
While BrahMos remains the world’s fastest supersonic missile, the new missile will operate at Mach 5 or above, over 6,174 km/h, making it almost impossible to intercept or track.
The missile uses scramjet engine technology, which allows it to sustain high speeds over long distances.
In November 2024, India successfully tested the Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRAShM) from Abdul Kalam Island, confirming the operational success of this technology.
This places India in an elite group of nations, Russia, China, and the USA, that possess functional hypersonic capabilities.
The former DRDO chief has confirmed that the engine has already been successfully tested, and the country is now preparing to showcase the missile globally.
Though exact specifications remain classified, reports suggest the range exceeds 1,500 kilometres, and it could potentially carry both conventional and nuclear warheads.
Hypersonic missiles not only move faster than sound but can also manoeuvre mid-flight, making them extremely difficult to detect or intercept.
Their deployment will significantly boost India’s strategic posture, especially against threats from China and Pakistan.
Additionally, India is working on a hypersonic variant of the BrahMos, which is expected to reach Mach 7–8, further enhancing its deterrence capability.
This new missile marks a major shift in India’s defence capabilities. It boosts national security and adds strong defence layers.
The missile gives India a powerful edge. It also shows that India is a modern military force with advanced technology.
