Green innovations enhance air quality at Maha Kumbh Mela

The Maha Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj’s Triveni Sangam is attracting millions of devotees daily, offering not only spiritual solace but also a breath of fresh air.

Despite the massive crowds, the air quality remains remarkably clean, thanks to the proactive measures taken by the Uttar Pradesh government over the past two years.

Preparing for the influx of pilgrims, the government initiated extensive efforts to improve the region’s air quality.

A key initiative was the adoption of the Japanese ‘Miyawaki’ technique to develop dense urban forests in minimal space.

This approach allowed for rapid plantation growth, transforming the environment in a short span of time.

Using the Miyawaki technique, officials established ten green pockets spanning 18.50 acres in Prayagraj.

These micro-forests were created by planting over 500,000 saplings from 63 native tree species. These include Banyan, Neem, Tamarind, Bamboo, Indian Gooseberry, and Peepal.

The technique ensures that trees grow faster and denser than through traditional methods, with saplings maturing into robust trees within just two years.

The government allocated ₹6 crore to this ambitious project. The result is a network of thriving green pockets that now act as natural air purifiers, releasing fresh oxygen and significantly improving air quality.

This eco-friendly initiative complements the spiritual significance of the Kumbh Mela, providing a healthier atmosphere for the millions of devotees participating in the event.

In addition to enhancing air quality, these urban forests symbolize a sustainable approach to environmental management.

They set a benchmark for balancing large-scale public gatherings with ecological responsibility.

The success of these efforts demonstrates how innovative techniques like the Miyawaki method can contribute to environmental conservation while addressing practical challenges.

By integrating green initiatives into public event planning, the Uttar Pradesh government has shown how infrastructure development and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.

The Maha Kumbh Mela now stands as a shining example of spiritual celebration coexisting harmoniously with environmental sustainability, inspiring similar efforts across the country.
