ISRO’s SpaDeX mission nears a milestone

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is on the brink of a significant achievement in space technology with its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission.

In a major trial conducted yesterday, two satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), successfully manoeuvred to within 3 meters of each other.

This brings India closer to mastering the intricate art of in-space docking.

During the trial, the satellites first approached a distance of 15 meters before coming as close as 3 meters.

ISRO confirmed the accomplishment and noted that after this close approach, the spacecraft was moved back to a safer distance.

The organization emphasized the importance of data analysis before proceeding with the actual docking process.

Launched on December 30, 2024, the SpaDeX mission aims to showcase India’s capability to perform in-space docking using small spacecraft.

If successful, India will join an elite group of nations, the US, Russia, and China — with this advanced technology.

The mission’s objectives include developing the technologies required for rendezvous, docking, and undocking operations.

Additionally, the mission will demonstrate key capabilities such as the transfer of electric power between docked spacecraft, composite spacecraft control, and post-undocking payload operations.

These advancements are critical for future endeavours, including in-space robotics, satellite servicing, and assembling structures in orbit.

ISRO’s careful approach to this demonstration highlights the complexity of docking two moving satellites.

The focus remains on ensuring accuracy over speed, as the mission lays the foundation for ambitious goals.

These include establishing a space station by 2035, bringing lunar samples to Earth, and achieving a crewed Moon mission by 2040.

SpaDeX reflects India’s commitment to innovation and precision in space exploration.

With this mission, ISRO continues to push boundaries, paving the way for transformative advancements in global space capabilities.
