The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will implement a new traceability rule on December 1 to combat spam messages and phishing attacks.

This regulation aims to enhance digital security by ensuring that all messages sent via telecom networks are traceable to their source.

However, TRAI has assured users that critical services like OTPs will remain unaffected.

The traceability rule targets unwanted promotional and phishing messages that scammers often use to access sensitive data, such as bank account information.


TRAI highlighted the growing menace of cyber fraud, emphasizing the importance of this initiative to curb financial scams and improve consumer protection.

Rumours had circulated on social media, sparking concerns that OTP services might face disruptions due to this new rule.

However, TRAI clarified that these fears are unfounded. Users of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and BSNL will continue to receive OTPs without any delay or hindrance.

The rule, initially set for October 1, 2024, was extended to November 1 before the final implementation date of December 1.

It mandates that telecom operators maintain a traceable record of message sources, enabling law enforcement to track cyber criminals more effectively.

This will significantly reduce spam and phishing attempts while fostering a safer digital environment.

Despite its advantages, the new directive has faced resistance from certain telemarketing firms, creating challenges for telecom operators. Providers have cited difficulties in adapting to these changes, yet TRAI remains firm on its commitment to implement the rule.

This regulation also underscores the importance of staying vigilant. Customers should report suspicious messages and avoid sharing personal information with unknown sources.

TRAI’s initiative reflects its dedication to balancing digital security with user convenience, ensuring uninterrupted access to essential services like OTPs while combating cyber threats.

With ₹6,000 crore allocated for compliance across networks, this effort marks a significant step toward a safer and more transparent telecommunications ecosystem.
