The organization that has been helping kids with Dyslexia for 30 years
The Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) in Chennai is on a mission to support kids with dyslexia and raise awareness about the condition.
Founded in 1992 by parents and educators, MDA aims to make learning easier for dyslexic children by focusing on early diagnosis and hands-on help.
Each October, the group organizes events like the Dyslexia Awareness Walk to get more people talking about dyslexia and to break down misunderstandings.
Dyslexia can make reading and writing tough, even for kids who are smart and capable in other areas. MDA’s Ananya Learning and Research Centre (ALRC) runs programs where kids receive individual plans that focus on multi-sensory learning — using sight, sound, and touch to make learning less stressful.
MDA also sets up resource rooms in schools, and trains teachers to spot signs of dyslexia early on. This way, teachers can help kids before they start falling behind. The organization doesn’t just focus on academics.
Through their Hydra program, kids take part in art, drama, and even yoga, which helps them build confidence and manage the anxiety that can come with dyslexia. Occupational therapy and regular counseling also play a big role, as these kids often need support beyond the classroom.
Over the past 30 years, MDA has directly helped over 1,500 kids at their center and provided part-time help to thousands more.
Founder D. Chandrasekhar points out that, although schools are slowly becoming more aware, there’s still a long way to go, especially in government schools.
He hopes MDA’s work can keep pushing the system forward, so all kids with dyslexia get the help they need without the stigma.
