Maharashtra’s inter-caste marriage scheme spurs social harmony
Inter-caste marriages in India continue to face strong resistance due to social norms, family opposition, and financial constraints.
Despite legal safeguards, many couples hesitate to take this step because of pressure from society and limited economic support.
To address these challenges and encourage social integration, the Maharashtra government has introduced a dedicated financial assistance programme for inter-caste marriages.
To encourage social integration and curb caste-based discrimination, the Maharashtra government runs a dedicated Inter-Caste Marriage Scheme.
The initiative supports couples who choose to marry across caste lines, intending to strengthen equality and unity in society.
Under the scheme, eligible couples receive financial assistance of ₹3 lakh. Of this amount, ₹50,000 is provided directly by the Maharashtra government. The remaining ₹2.5 lakh is released through the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Foundation.
The support is meant to help couples begin their married life without financial strain while reinforcing the message of social inclusion.
The scheme applies to marriages where at least one partner belongs to a Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Vimukta Jati (VJ), Nomadic Tribe (NT), or Special Backwards Class (SBC).
Both spouses must be permanent residents of Maharashtra. Additionally, the marriage must be legally registered under either the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, or the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
Age and marital status conditions also apply. The groom must be at least 21 years old, while the bride should be a minimum of 18 years of age.
Importantly, the benefit is available only for first marriages, ensuring the scheme reaches genuinely eligible couples.
Applicants are required to submit a set of essential documents. These include Aadhaar cards, caste certificates, age proof, a marriage registration certificate, bank passbook details, passport-size photographs, and a valid mobile number.
Accurate documentation is necessary for verification and timely disbursal of funds. Couples can apply for the scheme through both online and offline channels.
For online applications, they must visit the official website of the Social Justice Department of Maharashtra and select the Inter-Caste Marriage Scheme option on the homepage.
Alternatively, offline application forms can be collected and submitted at the office of the District Social Welfare Officer.
By combining financial assistance with a strong social message, the scheme aims to challenge deep-rooted prejudices and promote a more inclusive Maharashtra.
