Inspirational women scientists of India
In the Indian science field, women are generally considered a bit less than men. Here are four women who have achieved a great amount of success in recent years.
Yamuna Krishnan
Yamuna Krishnan makes experimental machines out of DNA. She works in the cutting edge field of bionanotechnology. Krishnan synthesizes nuclear bases into filaments of DNA which are less than 2 nanometers thick. They are sent into bodies and living cells to gather information on the inside conditions. They can read conditions like the acidity of a cell. This technology can be used to target deliver particular drugs.
Shubha Tole
Shubha Tole has found a master regulator gene which controls the brain’s cortex hippocampus and amygdala development. Her work gives information regarding how the evolution of the modern mammalian brain. Tole, who is a professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, was one of the recipients of the Infosys Prize in 2014.
Prerna Sharma
Prerna Sharma is a 29-year-old assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Science. She was also featured in Forbes’ 30-under-30 list, a list of people on the fast track in their respective fields. Sharma is a physicist who studies soft condensed matter like colloids, emulsions and surfactants, all of which have length scales of few microns, in between the two extremes of atomic and bulk matter.
Neena Gupta
Neena Gupta works at the Indian Statistical Institute and was awarded the National Science Academy’s medal for young scientists because she solved a mathematical problem which was unanswered for almost seven decades known as Zariski Cancellation Conjecture.
