Team behind Baahubali visuals
Ace Telugu filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s considered magnum opus, Baahubali, has been a word reverberating around India, and even in some other parts of the world, for the past few years.
He stopped at nothing, no length he would not go, to bring his brilliant vision to the big screen, and to life.
The first part, “Baahubali – The Beginning”, released in July of 2015, and the second part, “Baahubali – The Conclusion” releases on April 28th of this year, marking the end of this two-part franchise, the first entry has been one of the top-grossing films in India.
The magnificent scope of the plot could simply not allow for the creation of such gigantic sets and studios as it required. Therefore, the makers turned to what all prominent directors do: VFX.
They partnered with Makuta VFX, a company based in Santa Clara, California, in the United States, which has a branch in Hyderabad. Pete Draper, the co-founder of the company, speaks of how the technology is the first of its kind in Indian cinema, only before having been in American cinemas, British cinemas, and the like.
He promises that this second part is to be a visual treat, with the detail in quality being almost tenfold to the first.
Pete is hopeful about Indian cinema’s future in using these high-quality special effects, as the CGI department can never compromise on the quality of their work if it must be exemplary. The amount of time and effort consumed in making these two films, for example, is immediately present on the screen.
The sixty-five person crew at Makuta VFX has worked tirelessly for four years to bring this production to life, working fifteen months straight on the second part’s post-production alone.
The team has also launched a VR experience for the second part, which can be accessed with the Google Cardboard VR directly from people’s homes. They have then released a six-minute video that provides the audience with the experience of the locations from the film. For the best clarity possible, the makers used 4K resolution for filming the movie.
Persistence is key, so says Pete, and the cast and crew of this movie have been working tirelessly to bring it together. They have not left one detail untouched in their attempts to create the best possible film they could.
This second part of the franchise is set to break even more records than the first, and answer all the waiting that fans have longed to put at rest.
