INS Kochi: the largest warship of India

INS Kochi, the largest naval warship ever built in India was commissioned. The defence minister Manohar Parrikar did this historic action at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. At the dockyard, the minister stated that the INS Kochi has a great finishing which is on par with any foreign ship.

The motto for the ship is a saying in Sanskrit “Jahi Shatrun Mahabaho”. It translates to “Armed to conquer the enemy”. For a guided missile destroy which is equipped with many weapons and sensors along with stealth features, the motto is quite fitting.

When it comes to raw combat power, the only thing that greater than destroyers are aircraft carriers on the high seas. Once the induction of the INS Kochi is done, it will be the 10th destroyer in India’s combat fleet. The 7,500 tonne weighing warship is the second of three Kolkata-class destroyers which are being built at Mazagaon Docks (MDL), Mumbai. Each of them costs Rs. 4,000 crore a piece.

INS Kolkata was the first of this class. It was commissioned in August last year. The third one is the INS Chennai. It is planned to be inducted towards the end of 2016.

An even bigger project costing Rs 29,644 crore is ongoing now. The project aims to build four stealth destroyers at MDL. By the year 2018 or 2019, the first one called INS Visakhapatnam is set for delivery.

The entire Navy is proud of the commissioning of the INS Kochi. Admiral Robin Dhowan stated that INS Kochi will tremendously help in keeping safe the maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It also adds fuel to the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

By 2027, the Navy is planning to become a force with 200-warships with around 600 aircraft and helicopters. These expansion plans are to keep with the ever increasing country’s expanding geo-strategic interests.
