Visually challenged people that cleared UPSC exams

Though they do not have a normal vision to see, their vision on a goal fetched them a grand result in UPSC exams.

Here is the success story of a few visually challenged people. They are Gokul S, Purana Sunthari and Balanagendran who succeeded in the latest UPSC exams.

Gokul is a native of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He has been visually challenged since birth.

He cleared the UPSC exams in his first attempt and secured 804th rank. His first choice is IAS while the second is IFS. If he does not get his desired service due to his rank, he wants to attempt the exams another time.


Purana Sunthari from Madurai cracked the UPSC examination. She secured 286th rank. This is her fourth attempt. She did not believe the results at first and checked multiple times. She lost her vision when she was in class 1.

This 25-year-old visually impaired has a dream of becoming an IAS officer since her class XI.

Her friends and family helped her a lot in achieving her dream. Though it is difficult to achieve her dream, her determination helped her succeed.

She prepared for exams with the help of audiobooks. As she studied in Tamil Medium, she wrote exams in the Tamil language. She has been working at Tamil Nadu Grama Bank.

She is very happy with her success and wants to serve in the areas of education, women empowerment etc.

Balanagendran from Chennai secured 659th rank. This is his ninth attempt. He has been visually challenged since his birth. But it never hindered pursuing his dreams due to the support of his family.

Balanagendran has been appearing in UPSC exams since 2011. He first cracked the exams four years ago. At that time, he secured 927th rank. He was offered Group-A services. But, he did not take it up and attempted another time. He missed his goal by just 1 mark.

Now he hopes to achieve the desired position. He wants to work for the welfare of the children and eradicate crimes against them.
