Tamil Nadu ahead of Denmark and Sweden in Wind Energy

Around the world, an energy revolution is turning the trend away from coal and fossil fuels to more natural energy sources like water power, solar power, and wind power.

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) has recently done an assessment of the top 15 countries or power markets in the world, seeing which ones had the highest share of solar energy and wind energy in proportion to their total energy requirements.

Denmark is at the top, with 53% of its energy coming from renewable resources in 2017.

Southern Australia and Uruguay are following close behind, but Tamil Nadu, an Indian state, is quickly catching up as well.

In 2016 to 2017, 14.3% of Tamil Nadu’s energy requirements came from wind energy and solar energy. Tamil Nadu is also the top Indian state in its installed renewable energy capacity.

Zero emissions capacity makes up 50% of the state’s total installed renewable energy, with wind energy and solar energy making up 35%, hydroelectricity making up 7%, nuclear power making up 8%, and biomass and run of river making up 3%.

In fact, Tamil Nadu generates about 7,870 megawatts (MW) of wind energy, which is more wind energy than both Sweden and Denmark, who are at 6,700 MW and 5,500 MW respectively.

Tamil Nadu’s geographical conditions favour the rise in solar power and wind power there.

The coast of the state receives high wind density and velocity, and the state also receives over 300 days of sunshine.

The Government of India is happy about these developments, since they have set a target of sourcing 175 gigawatts (GW) of energy by 2022.

Although Tamil Nadu faces problems with its outdated and aging technology, the state is still making progress in both solar power and wind power.

With Tamil Nadu leading the way, India is hoping to keep pushing forward in the field of renewable energy.
