Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign launched

Swacch Bharat is a cleanliness campaign intended for a Clean India. The program was initiated two years ago by Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

In order to keep the country clean and improve cleanliness throughout the country, Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign was launched yesterday. The campaign which literally means “cleanliness is service” will be continued till Gandhi Jayanthi i.e. October 2.

The main motive of the campaign is to make the dream of Mahatma Gandhi “Clean India” become true by gathering people with support for sanitation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his radio programme Mann Ki Baat on August 27, 2017 announced it and appealed for the nation to create a clean and neat environment to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi which will be celebrated in an appropriate manner.


He also urged that all government officials, political leaders, schools, colleges and NGOs should focus on improving the cleanliness in country.

Ministry of Drinking water and sanitation also coordinates the event by initiating Shramdaan or voluntary work.

Several cabinet ministers and the President of India launched the campaign yesterday in different regions of the country.

President Ram Nath Kovind started the program in Ishwari Ganj village of Uttar Pradesh.

Vice President M.Venkaiah Naidu will participate in a toilet construction program in Karnataka on Sunday by offering shramdaan. He will also join in a general cleanliness program.

In this regards, Home Minister Rajnath Singh in the Swachhta Hi Sewa campaign in New Dekhi stated that the construction of toilets is being done in around 4.60 lakh houses and 4 lakh schools throughout the country.

He revealed that some states in India are now declared as open-defecation free states.

These include Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Sikkim and Uttarakhand.

He added that more than 2.50 lakh Gram Panchayats and cities will join in the event across India.
