Supreme Court refuses to stay NEET ordinance

The stay on National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) ordinance has been refused by the Supreme Court on May 27. The stay was earlier put forth in the court to stop the ordinance on NEET exam. However, the court has mentioned that this matter should be solved by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) bench in July.

The center filed this ordinance for stay of NEET. A stay was requested on this ordinance which has been refused by the Supreme Court which said that there is no need for interim order. The court added that NEET was not denied by the government but only some states have been given exemption. They added that if they intervene now, there would be more confusion.

The plea was made earlier to Supreme Court asking it to stop the recent ordinance which lets states continue their separate entrance tests for MBBS and BDS courses instead of the all India medical test NEET for academic year 2016-2017.

The plea has been filed by Indore based doctor Anand Rai. He also claims that he is the whistle blower in the Vyapam scam.

The ordinance for NEET has been signed by President Pranab Mukherjee himself on May 24. According to the plea, the government took a complete U-turn. It said that such a move depicts ill intentions towards the process of student admission. It added that students will be the ones who suffer most.

NEET was supposed to be a common entrance test for all medical students across India. With this ordinance, several states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Punjab have been exempted from it.

Union Health Minister J P Nadda discussed the matter with President and said that all private institutions and medical colleges will come under NEET.

In this academic year (2016-17), state governments will get an opportunity to appear for under-graduate examinations separately. However, this year December, the post-graduation examination will be under NEET.
