Soon these National Highways will be world class express highways

Government proposes to change eight National Highways into world class express highways soon to reinforce the country’s road infrastructure.

The NHs that are permitted to upgrade as world class expressways are as follows: 249 km of Delhi-Chandigarh section of NH-1 and NH-22, Delhi-Jaipur segment of NH-8 that consists of 261 km, Bangalore-Chennai stretch of NH-4 that has 334 km, 277 km Kolkata-Dhanbad section of NH-2, 200 km of Delhi-Agra segment of NH-2, Eastern Peripheral Expressway that is 135 km long, and 66 km Delhi-Meerut section of NH-58.

This was announced by Pon Radhakrishnan, Minister of state for Road Transport and Highways in Lok Sabha yesterday.

He said that viability of the above mentioned projects is under study and the work will be started after the completion of study and acquiring the land for it.


An express highway is a regulated access highways which is generally 6-lane or more.

Here entrance and exit is regulated by the usage of ramps which are combined into the design of the highway.

The Indian road network is the second largest in the world with its length of 33 lakh km.

It comprises of 92,851 kms of National Highways out of which just 1.7 percent is the road network. Yet around 40 percent of the whole road traffic is carried about by it.
