Second domestic aircraft carrier design to be finalized by year end

It seems the designs for the Second domestic aircraft carrier will be finalized by the end of the year. According to official reports, by the end of this year, India expects to confirm the design for the largest battleship that was ever built for the Indian Navy. That is not the only great thing about this aircraft carrier, it will also be one of the largest carriers across the world coming second only to the U.S. super carriers which weigh about 1,00,000 tonnes.

As per official Navy sources, the new Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC-II) would have a weight of 65,000 tonnes. The carrier will be made to be capable of carrying more than 50 aircraft. When compared to this aircraft carrier, the others fall short. For example: INS Viraat is only 28,500 tonnes and INS Vikramaditya is 45,400 tonnes. Both those aircrafts are not domestic made and are of foreign origin currently in service with the Indian Navy. India has already started the construction of the first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant which weighs 40,000 tonnes at Kochi.

By now, the feasibility study for IAC-II has already begun. After around 8-10 months of the study, the design of the aircraft carrier will be decided says a senior Navy official.

This is the first time India is building such a large ship domestically involving development of many new technologies. So, in order to make it in the best possible way, India is seeking expertise from design consultancies from foreign companies with expertise in carrier design and construction.

In order for the consultancy purpose, India has chosen five countries which are: the U.S., Russia, France, the U.K. and Italy. All the five countries currently operate carriers.

According to officials, Vikrant was in an advanced stage of construction and it was set to be delivered by December 2018.
