Lal Bahadur Shastri – 2nd Prime Minister of India

Lal Bahadur Shastri is another famous personality that was born on October 2. He was the second Prime Minister of India. The meaning of Shastri in his name is ‘scholar’. The title was given to him by Kashi Vidyapeeth where he graduated.

Shastri joined the freedom movement of India, and participated in non-cooperation movement and Salt Satyagraha. He was prisoned by the British for participating in them. After the death of first Prime Minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru, he became the Prime Minister in 1964. In 1965, a war broke between India and Pakistan. The Tashkent Declaration was one of his achievements which was a peace agreement made between India and Pakistan after this war. His slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan is very popular and vibrates in the hearts of Indians even today. He was a soft-spoken person. He was an honest and dedicated man to solve problems such as poverty, hunger and unemployment which were prevalent in the country at that time. He lived a very simple life. He did not own a home which reveals his simplicity.
