Delhi government to monitor air quality during odd-even scheme

Delhi government implemented the first phase of odd-even formula scheme in January this year to curb air pollution in the national capital. Now, the second phase of the system is going to be implemented in April.

The second phase of the system starts from April 15. The AAP government decided to install air quality monitoring system in Delhi to check the quality of air during the second phase.

As per Gopal Rai, Transport Minister, the government has asked the environment department to prepare a comprehensive plan for identifying locations so that they can install air quality monitoring devices during the second phase of the odd-even formula scheme.

Earlier, in the first phase of the scheme, the government installed such devices at six locations to curb the severe pollution levels in the national capital. But, now, the government decided to install such devices in not just Delhi, but also in NCR to check the air pollution levels. Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Sonipat and other bordering areas will also have these devices. 20 mobile teams will also be there to monitor the air quality and pollution on various roads of the city throughout the capital. The sample taking will start from April 5 i.e. 10 days prior to the scheme.

A study revealed that the level of pollutants had reduced in the air of national capital during the first phase of odd-even formula scheme. Though the total pollution levels increased throughout NCR in January i.e. in the month of first phase of odd-even formula scheme than the previous month, the pollution levels in Delhi had increased slighter due to the scheme as per US-based research. The joint research that was conducted by the scholars of Energy Policy Institute in the University of Chicago (EPIC) and Evidence for Policy Design group in Harvard University, the pollutant levels reduced in noon during the pilot project.
