Women receiving Death Penalty for the First Time in India’s History
For the first time in India, women are receiving a death sentence. Two Kolhapur women are now sentenced for hanging. These women will be the first women to ever be hanged in India. They have kidnapped 13 children in 2001 and killed nine of them.

The president of India, Pranab Mukherjee has rejected the mercy petitions of Renuka Kiran Shinde and her sister Seema Mohan Gavit. This Saturday will mark the end of the buffer period that has been given to the two women.

The buffer period is the time taken by the state home department to inform all concerned after they receive the note from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
In India, the number of people who received death penalty has always been a matter of dispute. It has claimed by the government that only 52 people have been hanged in India since its Independence. On the other hand, it has been found by People’s Union for Civil Liberties that the number of executions is in fact much higher than that. They have found that 1,422 executions have been done from the decade of 1953 to 1963 alone. But till this point, there have been no records of a woman being hanged. The two women Renuka and Seema have kidnapped children and forced them to begging. They killed the children after the children stopped being productive.
